Arkansas State University

Under the direction of Dr. Chris Harper, The Arkansas State University Debate Team is committed to being both educational and competitively successful at the regional, national, and international level. Our debaters compete in multiple formats of intercollegiate debate including: NPDA, IPDA, LD, and World Style Debate. Our typical travel schedule consists of a mix between regional (Baton Rouge, Nashville, St. Louis), National (San Diego, Denver,Vermont), and International (we have taken students to Madrid, Berlin, Vancouver, Prague, London, Austria and Rome).

We have very lucrative scholarship packages available for incoming freshman on a competitive basis. We encourage all students wishing to further there debating careers to apply.

The University of Central Arkansas Debate and Competitive Speech team participates in IPDA debate as well as individual events. We travel to about twelve tournaments throughout the academic year (all of them have debate, and 3-4 have individual events). The team is open to all majors, classes, and experience levels.

We will be hosting our high school tournament on February 8-9, 2013. We will offer high school policy debate, individual events, and IPDA debate. We will also offer a mock trial scrimmage if there is sufficient interest. In addition, we will have our annual invitational IPDA tournament on March 8-10, 2013. While it is a collegiate tournament, we invite and encourage high schools to participate. The hope is that, at some point in the future, we can offer a separate high school division, but until we get enough participants, we have to treat them like any other squad. Invitations to both tournaments will be available in late-October (if not earlier).

Finally, we have scholarships available for those majors and minors within the Department of Communication. We offer a scholarship worth up to $2000/yr for students who have demonstrated talent in competitive speech or debate. The scholarships are conditioned upon declaring a major or minor in speech communications or public relations and participation in UCA Debate and Competitive Speech. Outstanding high school debaters and forensics students are encouraged to apply.
